‘Grab wagons’ helps our network partners remove spoil and fill in approximately 1 million excavations each year.
But these big pieces of machinery, which are capable of transporting up to 20 tonnes of material to and from a site, can cause damage to carriageways and highways.
This is due not only to their weight, geometry and force but the steel material that the ‘clamshell’ bucket which picks up the spoil is made from.

This results in fines from the Local Authority as well as increased inconvenience to customers and negative impact on the environment.
