Uniform Application of Skid Resistant Chippings on Road Surfaces

Introduction

The latest in a series of Calls for Innovation seeks potential solutions to a problem area identified by Network Operators, focusing on ‘Uniform Application of Skid Resistant Chippings on Road Surfaces.

The Goal

Our Network partners are seeking a solution or method that will allow uniform application of chippings by hand, therefore minimising the chance of future road surface issues.

The Outline Design Specification

A solution or method to apply stone chippings for smaller excavations is desired. It needs to accomplish the following:

  • Even application of stone chippings.
  • Application of stone chippings at a temperature such that stone chippings do not sink too far into the tarmac as it cures.
  • Compliance with 6 of the Specification for the Reinstatement of Openings in Highways document.
  • Hand application, or with tools small and light enough to be used by no more than 2 operatives (under 25kg per person).
  • Be cost competitive.
  • Be simple enough to be used correctly each time, especially while operatives are under time pressure and often working in adverse weather conditions.
  • Be robust enough to withstand daily use and last for a minimum of 1-3 years.
