The latest in a series of Calls for Innovation seeks potential solutions to a problem area identified by the distribution network operators (DNOs) with a focus on sourcing a retrofit cable temperature monitoring system.
Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS) is a proven methodology used in different industries to monitor the thermal conditions of various types of equipment. A DTS system uses optical fibres as temperature sensors and monitors a continuous temperature profile along them.
Accurate real-time temperature monitoring of power cables could lead to optimal asset utilisation. Deploying a DTS system can provide full thermal visibility along the cable on a real-time basis.
The EIC’s DNO partners are seeking a cable temperature monitoring technology/solution that can provide real time thermal ratings at specific points along a cable network. The solution must also be a retrofit solution that can be applied to existing high voltage cable installations.
