Live mains renewal is undertaken by the networks as it minimises time off gas, reduces time excavations are open and lowers the impact on the environment. The technique involves commissioning the new main with gas prior to insertion into the old main, via the live head. The PE pipe is then inserted up to 100 metres into the main, customers are transferred onto the inserted pipe. Once all customers are reconnected, the live head is recovered.
The Gas Distribution Network is looking for a simple technology, product or process to clearly identify the first metre from the live head.
The network would like to accurately and clearly identify this section of pipe in extremely low light. It is after this point that the expanding foam will be entered safely without the risk of isolating supplies.
