This Call for Innovation seeks potential solutions to a problem area identified by the gas distribution network operators (GDNs) with a focus on providing a Tamper Rammer where very little or no manual handling is required whilst still maintaining the current compaction rates.
GDN’s undertake significant civil engineering work, requiring permenant highway reinstatement. Current practice, to ensure correct pavement and carriageway reinstatement, involves the use of mechanical compaction equipment. Any vibrating equipment comes with the risk of hand-arm vibration (HAV’s) which can result in ill health issues for operators. Wherever there is a risk to exposure to hand-arm vibration GDN’s are constantly looking for alternative equipment and/or working methods to remove or reduce the risk. Our partner is looking to remove, if possible, the operator from the Tamper Rammer. In addition, they are looking to minimise the time of exposure.
