Dynamic ratings calculation engine for cable circuits

The latest in a series of Calls for Innovation seeks potential solutions to a problem area identified by the distribution network operators (DNOs) with a focus on developing a Dynamic Capacity Rating (DCR) calculation engine which can determine the actual real-time current carrying capacity on cable circuits.


There is now a requirement to determine the actual real-time current carrying capacity (dynamic rating) for these cable circuits along with potential headroom capacity (short term permissible overload capacity). In the future, there could be a need to determine dynamic cable ratings at other voltage levels. For this reason, there is a need for a DCR calculation engine using real-time DTS data which can carry out these calculations.


The desired output from the call would be either:


  • An early-stage technology or
  • A market-ready product.


The solution should benefit the networks by giving them a DCR calculation engine that will determine dynamic cable ratings on cable circuits.


The DCR calculation engine will improve the utilisation of existing undeground cable circuits (400V to 400 kV) and unlock some capacity if the underground cables are operated based on their real-time dynamic ratings.
