Grass Verge Protection

The latest in a series of Calls for Innovation seeks potential solutions to a problem area identified by network operators related to the protection of grass verges surrounding streetworks from secondary damage caused by pedestrians or vehicles.

During the period June 2017 to May 2018, one network operator was required to reinstate the grass verge at approximately 10,000 sites.  A good proportion of these issues were attributed to secondary damage to the grass verge.

Network operators routinely need to access underground assets. This requires excavation work which tends to damage the ground and grass verges above the assets. This cannot be avoided.

Secondary damage occurs on the surrounding grass verges which are used as a pathway either by pedestrians or vehicles. This can lead to complaints from customers and the local authorities.

Network operators are looking for a solution to protect the grass verges from secondary damage. The ideal solution, which could be a covering solution, would protect the grass verges from secondary damage, whilst allowing pedestrians and light vehicle traffic.
