CNG Services Ltd, which won Best Innovation Implemented or Adopted by a Contractor at the UK Energy Innovation Awards

Award winners spotlight: CNG SERVICES LIMITED

John Baldwin is managing director at CNG Services Ltd, which won Best Innovation Implemented or Adopted by a Contractor at the UK Energy Innovation Awards in Manchester earlier this year.

CNG Services provides design, consultancy and project management services in relation to biomethane to grid and natural gas including design and project management services in relation to gas pipelines.

John said: “Our winning entry was based on Hexel One Pipeline at Raynham. The project was the first use of plastic for a high pressure gas pipeline in the UK.”

The work was undertaken using innovation funding from Ofgem due to its unique approach. As well as the use of plastic, the project also included the first single Grid Entry Unit kiosk adjacent to compressor.

Speaking about the use of plastic in the project, John highlighted how the innovation could shape the future of energy: “Plastic is able to reduce capital and operating costs for pipelines, supporting projects in areas of biomethane, CNG and shale gas.”

CNG Services is independent from equipment suppliers and provides an ‘owner’s engineer’ service including design, project specification and management. The company is known for its ability to support the development of new anaerobic digester projects, including a range of utilisation options for biogas.

John added: “It’s been really great to see wider industry recognition for efforts of the team. Hopefully HSE will approve this technology and National Grid Gas Distribution and the other GDNs will allow its widespread adoption.”
